Baremetrics vs ProfitWell: free metrics, Retain and Recover

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerProfitWell Metrics costs nothing and Retain comes inside Paddle Billing, so a Paddle seller should start there. On Stripe, Braintree or Recurly, Baremetrics adds Recover; Retain there goes through a Paddle demo.

Baremetrics vs ProfitWell: who should pick which

ProfitWell Metrics costs nothing, while Baremetrics' pricing page lists no free plan, so the choice is whether Baremetrics' paid plans and add-ons earn their price. ProfitWell is now part of Paddle, which calls ProfitWell Metrics "completely free". Baremetrics Launch is $49 a month with the pricing page's yearly-billing switch on and $75 a month with it off, for up to $360K ARR, as read on October 23, 2026. Recover (Payment Recovery) adds +$129 a month.

Metrics and Retain are separate decisions. Paddle Retain, formerly ProfitWell Retain, handles failed payments and cancellations and comes built into Paddle Billing.

ProfitWell Metrics against Baremetrics reports

Paddle describes ProfitWell Metrics as revenue reporting for subscription and SaaS companies, free of charge. Baremetrics sells subscription analytics by ARR band: Launch to $360K ARR, Growth from $360K to $3.6M and Scale above $3.6M, as its pricing page prints them. Growth adds custom dashboards, benchmarks, goal tracking and Slack and Intercom integrations. Scale adds scenario planning and an analytics API.

Baremetrics says it tracks over 28 metrics. It offers a 14-day free trial from its sign-up page, so it can be tried before you weigh it against a product that costs nothing. Baremetrics vs ChartMogul sets it against the other analytics tool with a free plan.

Paddle Retain against Baremetrics Recover

Paddle's Retain page lists optimized retry logic, dunning, an update page where customers fix payment details, and cancellation flows. Paddle claims Retain can cut customer churn by 25-30%.

Recover has no retry schedule of its own. It sends seven emails by default, SMS, in-app banners and a hosted card form, and your processor does the retrying. Retain's list therefore includes the retry timing that Recover leaves to your processor, while Recover's card form lives on a Baremetrics subdomain or your own domain. Baremetrics Recover has the full list.

What ProfitWell Retain costs on Paddle Billing and off it

ProfitWell Retain pricing, now Paddle Retain pricing, comes down to Paddle Billing: Paddle prints no dollar price for Retain. It says Retain comes with Paddle Billing at no extra cost.

Paddle Billing costs 5% + 50 cents per Checkout transaction, with no monthly fees, migration fees or hidden extras, and custom pricing comes by demo. That is a per-transaction basis, unlike Baremetrics' monthly fee by ARR band, so the two cannot be set side by side without your own transaction volume.

On another billing system Retain runs through a JavaScript snippet after a demo, with no price shown. Baremetrics' comparison page calls Retain a performance-based add-on with a rate not published; Paddle's own Retain page describes it as built into Paddle Billing at no extra cost and prints no rate.
