What is Baremetrics?
Baremetrics is subscription analytics software, sold by a company the terms call Baremetrics Inc. You connect the billing system you already use, and it reads subscription and payment data from it, then calculates monthly recurring revenue, annual run rate, churn and lifetime value. The home page says more than 900 companies use it, which is the vendor's own claim.
Readers ask whether Baremetrics is a company or an app. It is a company that sells a web app at baremetrics.com, and the product is aimed at SaaS and other subscription businesses. Its plans are sorted by the annual recurring revenue it tracks, so company size sets the plan, and the add-ons are priced separately.
How it works
- Connect: you link a billing source. The pricing page lists Stripe, Braintree, Chargebee, Recurly, the Apple and Google app stores and Shopify, plus QuickBooks Online, Xero and a universal connector.
- Read: Baremetrics reads the billing data and builds MRR movements, churn, cohorts and segments. One of its comparison pages says it corrects for proration, time zones and trial edge cases, which is a vendor claim.
- Act: the add-ons run outreach. Recover emails customers after a failed charge, and Cancellation Insights records why a customer cancels.
- Report: dashboards, email reports and an API show the numbers, with recovered revenue next to MRR and churn.
What each part does
- Subscription analytics: the core product, with trial insights and segments on every plan, and benchmarks and custom dashboards on higher plans.
- Recover: dunning outreach for failed card payments, with timed emails, SMS, in-app banners that can become a paywall and a hosted card-update form.
- Cancellation Insights: a survey in the cancel flow, plus follow-up messages based on the reason a customer gives.
- Forecast+: runway, burn-rate and scenario models fed by QuickBooks or Xero, with scenario planning and budget tracking listed on the top plan.
How Recover works beside your processor's retries
When a card payment fails, three things can happen at once. Your payment processor retries the charge, for example with Stripe Smart Retries. Recover emails the customer on a timed schedule, adds SMS and shows in-app banners. The customer then updates the card on a hosted form, and on Stripe, Braintree and Recurly the new card is saved to the subscription.
Recover has no retry schedule of its own. Revenue recovery here means failed subscription card payments, not debt collection.
What Baremetrics is not
- Not a billing system. It reads the data from yours.
- Not a payment processor. Charges and retries stay with Stripe, Braintree, Recurly, Chargebee or your gateway.
- Not a CRM. Baremetrics' comparison page says it integrates with HubSpot instead.
- Not Stripe-only. Baremetrics says nearly half its customers run on Stripe, which is its own figure, and it lists several other billing sources.
Who it is for
Baremetrics is built for subscription founders and finance leads who need more than the dashboard in their billing system. Whether a monthly add-on is worth it depends on how much revenue fails each month, and smaller businesses usually start with the retries and emails already included in their billing system. The review covers limits and fit, the pricing guide shows how plans and add-ons are billed, and the recovery how-to covers the free settings to use first.
