✓ SaaS founders on Stripe, Braintree, Recurly or Chargebee whose failed payments are large enough to cover a monthly add-on
✓ Teams that want failed payment outreach, cancellation data and MRR in one dashboard
✓ Businesses whose failures come mainly from expired or replaced cards
✓ Founders who want a named analytics product rather than a billing system dashboard
— Very small businesses with few failed payments each month
— Anyone still to switch on the retries and emails inside their billing system
— Teams that want a vendor team to run recovery for them
— Founders who only need basic metrics and a free plan
Best failed payment recovery tools: the short list
Six options cover most cases, in two groups. Three are the retries and emails inside a billing system: Stripe Billing, Chargebee and Recurly. Three are layers sold on top: Baremetrics Recover, Churn Buster and Churnkey. The list is not a ranking. Each vendor's own pages were read on October 23, 2026, and amounts are left to the live pages. Failed subscription payments here means card charges on recurring plans, not debt collection.
What each option does
- Stripe Billing: Smart Retries picks retry times, with a recommended default of 8 tries within 2 weeks. It sends a failed payment email after each failure, expiring-card emails a month ahead and a link to a hosted page where customers update the card. Hard declines are not retried until a new card is added.
- Chargebee: dunning retries failed online payments and sends reminder emails, with smart retry logic that adjusts timing by error type. Its documentation warns that multiple retries can raise the decline ratio and that a gateway account can be blacklisted for that or for breaking card network rules.
- Recurly: dunning management is on every plan with a default campaign. Multiple targeted campaigns, up to 50, need the Professional or Elite plan. Its documentation also lists an account updater and static and intelligent retries.
- Baremetrics Recover: no retries. Up to seven emails by default, SMS, in-app banners that become a paywall, a hosted card-update form and expiry reminders 30 and 7 days ahead.
- Churn Buster: dunning run with a retention team, with a tuned retry strategy, emails from a dedicated sending pool, then SMS, and a no-login card-update page on Stripe and Braintree.
- Churnkey: built for Stripe. Its Precision Retries layer on top of Stripe's own logic, with email, SMS and in-app campaigns and a payment wall.
How to compare: how each one bills
- Stripe Billing: recovery features are listed as included with Billing, which has its own fee on a pricing page that shows regional rates.
- Chargebee and Recurly: dunning is documented as a feature of the billing platform itself, and Recurly's multiple-campaign option depends on the plan.
- Baremetrics Recover: an add-on to any Baremetrics plan. Baremetrics' comparison pages describe a flat monthly option or a share of recovered revenue.
- Churn Buster: a flat monthly fee set by your MRR tier, month to month, plus a free Measure plan that analyzes any dunning tool's results.
- Churnkey: plan tiers set by monthly churn volume, with a 14-day trial.
When the built-in tools are enough
Turn on every recovery setting in your billing system first. Retries handle temporary declines such as insufficient funds. Emails and card-update links handle expired cards. A layer such as Recover runs next to retries, so it adds value only on what is left. Baremetrics says the average subscription business has about 9 percent of MRR at risk from failed payments, which is a vendor figure. If your failed payments are a small fraction of that, no add-on can win back enough to cover a monthly fee. The pricing guide gives the break-even arithmetic.
When a paid layer is the better fit
- Expired or replaced cards cause most of your failures, so reaching the customer matters more than retry timing.
- You want branded emails in your own voice, SMS, an in-app paywall or a hosted update page.
- You want a vendor team to tune recovery and watch results, which is Churn Buster's model.
- You want recovered revenue next to MRR and churn in one dashboard, which is Baremetrics' model.
- Compare vendors on the same recovery rate. Baremetrics divides recovered revenue by recovery attempts, a different base from recovered revenue over all failed charges. Churnkey's page claims Stripe alone recovers 51 percent of failed payments in 5.5 days and its retry layer 55 percent in 4.8 days. Treat figures like these as the vendors' own claims, not as typical results.
