Card account updater Stripe guide: automatic updates and the gaps

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerStripe tries to update saved cards automatically through the card networks, with no fee on its pricing pages, but only where the issuer takes part. Expiring-card reminders help with some of the rest.

Card account updater Stripe: what happens automatically

Stripe attempts card account updates for you. A card account updater is a card-network service that passes updated card details to merchants for recurring payments, and Stripe calls its version automatic card updates. Stripe says it works with the card networks to attempt an update whenever a customer receives a new card, and that support is wide in the United States, covering most American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards issued there.

Visa's version, Visa Account Updater, lets issuers, acquirers and qualified merchants exchange updated account information for recurring payments. Mastercard's Automatic Billing Updater notifies merchants, payment facilitators and acquirers when an issuer changes a stored card. Stripe sends a payment_method.automatically_updated event when an update happens.

Does Stripe charge a card account updater fee?

No fee for card account updates appears on Stripe's Billing pricing page or its general pricing page, as read on October 23, 2026. The Billing pricing page marks its recovery rows as included, and Stripe's Billing page lists "Expired card updates" without the asterisk it uses for features at an additional cost. Recurly differs: its docs say Account Updater requires an additional cost and print no figure.

A recovery tool is a separate bill. Baremetrics' Recover (Payment Recovery) is one such add-on, so the question is whether reminders and a card-update form are worth adding to the updates Stripe already attempts.

Where automatic updates stop: issuers and closed accounts

Stripe says automatic card updates need the card issuer to take part and that it cannot identify which cards support them. Outside the United States, support varies from country to country. Stripe says it attempts the update, so a card can still fail on the next charge.

A closed account is a different case. Mastercard's updater reports account closure as well as expiry and number changes, and under Visa's rules a closed account is a Category 1 decline that a merchant must never resubmit. No update can fix that card, so the customer must supply a new one. This is not legal or financial advice.

Stripe adds that a saved card can change only its name, billing address, expiration date or metadata, so most other changes mean a new card. It tells merchants to build a manual way to update and replace saved cards.

Expiring-card emails from Stripe, Recover and Stunning

When an update attempt misses, a reminder asks the customer to act before the card fails.

Which tool warns customers about the cards Stripe misses

Baremetrics Recover sends two card-expiration reminders, 30 and 7 days before expiry, and has a hosted card-update form, as part of its $129 monthly add-on to a Baremetrics plan, as read on October 23, 2026. Baremetrics says "Your first 14 days of Recover are on us!"

Reminders only ask the customer to act: they do not update a card. A business with few expiring cards can stay on Stripe's one email a month ahead and its automatic updates. Baremetrics vs Stunning sets the two reminder schedules side by side, Stripe dunning emails covers what Stripe sends after a payment fails, and how to recover failed subscription payments puts the steps in order.
